The Unity candle is a recent addition to the large numbers of wedding traditions. It consists of three candles: most commonly two tapers and a pillar candle. Older versions of the tradition have the partners blowing out their candle as the larger candle is lit.

Individual lights can be lit as the mothers/parents enter or during the part of the ceremony that celebrates the families’ support of the bridal couple. Light the third candle from the light of the two candles. You make sure the environment is right for the candle-lighting. Then burn these candles at home.

Using Unity Candles to Symbolize Your Wedding Vows

Executive Summary about Wedding Unity Candles by Tania Penwell

Speaking of two souls, the custom is to actually light three candles - one each for the two people getting married, and one larger pillar candle to signify the union. At my daughter Joanna’s wedding last year, I used a special candle holder that accommodated all three candles, though most people I know prefer individual candle holders.

When I make unity candles, I prefer to make the two single candles thin and tapering, while the larger candle is a no-frills pillar. Lighting these candles obviously holds no religious connotations, so there are no rules about how to light them. Who actually lights these candles? So what do you do with the unity candles once the wedding ceremony is over?
